Convert SNS. ‘We’re an ageing country and that’s fine’

According to Pordata, there will be around 4,000 people over the age of 100 in Portugal by 2021, and the company estimates that over the next 30 years, that number could exceed 10,000 by 2050. From Manuel Lopes’ point of view, it’s very positive because it means we can create the conditions for people to reach this age. “It’s good that we are an aging country”, said a professor at the São João de Deus School of Nursing at the University of Evora, who participated in the second podcast, Transformar o SNS, on the topics of “health promotion”, life paths and Aging – the urgency of new answers”. However, the professor also recognized the difficulty of combating the burden of disease, which remains high beyond the age of 65. The solution, he noted, is to develop a suite of health promotion and disease prevention across the lifespan strategies, not just at a more advanced stage. “Investment in these policies guarantees results, albeit not in the short term,” he stressed.
